Superwoman
posted in Uncategorized |This weekend, I went to Atlantic City with a looooong-time friend of mine, Maritza. We went to a concert. ALICIA KEYS YA’LL! This young woman is so very talented that she leaves you open-mouthed in wonder at her skills. Her opening acts were Jordan Sparks (Alyson, is this the one that you said was my twin?) and Ne-YO (thanks for the correction, Jeanine! LOL). Both did fantastic jobs but Alicia…well, she’s in a class all by herself.
Isn’t she absolutely gorgeous? I remember when she started when she was like 17, 18. Wow, the voice, the talent, she writes her own songs, plays the piano….
One of my favorite moments was when after singing her first few intro songs, she starts chatting and says, “Everyone is always telling me, ‘Alicia, why don’t you show more skin? Do more?’ and all I say is that I want to do what I love and that is to play my piano. So, Atlantic City, DO YOU ALL MIND IF I PLAY MY PIANOOOOOOO?”
The place went wild because she is QUITE handy with a piano (you can see it there in the middle of the stage).
I love most of her songs but the one that has made me cry ever since the absolutely first time I heard it is Superwoman. It speaks of all us women out here busting our asses trying to make do. Not even trying to exceed too much in life, just making DO. Just getting by. Making sure there’s food on that table, bills and rent are paid, kids are clothed and neat, and shit is DONE. And, still when you’re a mess, you put an S on your chest, because you are Superwoman.
This post is dedicated to ALL of my MANY superwomen friends out there. You know who you are, I don’t have to tell you. The ones that are living check to check like me with some little luxuries in between that we work extra to afford. The ones out there that may or may not have a loving, supportive husband or wife or significant other by your side to help you. The ones that HAVE to go to work to make sure that their kids have health insurance and try to give them a good life. The ones that struggle with worries day to day on what the future may hold for your families.
This one’s for you. I brought you back a piece of the concert. I want you to click this link to listen to what makes your girl, Rosi G., cry every. single. time. she hears it because it just reminds her of her own life. (Be patient with the link. It’s a large file so it may take a while, but it’s oh, so very worth it!)
But I try to always have a smile on my face and just keep it moving. Because, shit, I’m Superwoman.
Superwoman by Alicia Keys
Everywhere I’m turning
Nothing seems complete
I stand up and I’m searching
For the better part of me
I hang my head from sorrow
Slave to humanity
I wear it on my shoulders
Gotta find the strength in me
Cause I am a Superwoman
Yes I am
Yes she is
Even when I’m a mess
I still put on a vest
With an S on my chest
Oh yes
I’m a Superwoman
For all the mothers fighting
For better days to come
And all my women, all my women sitting here trying
To come home before the sun
And all my sisters
Coming together
Say yes I will
Yes I can

Cause I am a Superwoman
Yes I am
Yes she is
Even when I’m a mess
I still put on a vest
With an S on my chest
Oh yes
I’m a Superwoman
When I’m breaking down
And I can’t be found
And I start to get weak
Cause no one knows
Me underneath these clothes
But I can fly
We can fly, Oooohh
Cause I am a Superwoman
Yes I am
Yes she is
Even when I’m a mess
I still put on a vest
With an S on my chest
Oh yes
I’m a Superwoman
