Hair experiments!!

As I mentioned in my previous post, my hair is relaxed but each summer I decide to wear it curly because it’s easier since I sweat a lot. Setting my hair in rollers every week in the hot NY weather is NOT fun. I learned how to use a diffuser thanks to Cristi two years ago. LOOOVE it. From then on I’ve been trying different products to see what works best for me. My stylist always curls my hair with TreSemme curly mousse, lots of Shine serum and the diffuser. Comes out REALLY nice and curly. But……thanks to the Naturally Curly Crafters Rav Group and some net searches I’ve found Curly Girl. I don’t plan to do the whole no-poo thing cuz I am not comfortable with that. But I did go shopping today for several hair products, including Curl Junkie stuff which I LOVE.

Oh, and I’ve figured out that my hair is between 3b and 3c and is Coarse and Thick, according to these guidelines.

So here was this evening’s routine:

1 – Washed hair twice with BioInfusion Olive Oil Conditioning Shampoo (8 oz bottle, $8, Walgreens)
2 – Applied Curl Junkie Hibiscus & Banana Deep Fix conditioner in the shower and left it on for 5-8 minutes. (8 oz jar, $18)
3 – Untangled my hair and rinsed. I must note here that my hair untangled EASILY and I hadn’t washed it in FIVE days! LOVE!
4 – Flipped hair upside down and raked Hibiscus & Banana Deep Fix conditioner through hair as a leave-in.
5 – Raked Curl Junkie Coffee-Coco cream through hair while still upside down (4 oz., $14)
6 – Raked and scrunched Flax Seed Gel made by me (recipe to follow) through hair.
7 – Used Turbie Twist to scrunch hair and scrunch out as much water as possible. As I was doing this I ALREADY noticed nice frizz-free curls!
8 – As I still had my head upside down, I used 3 duck-bill clips to pin parts of my hair on top of my head.
9 – I then put on my A Little Nightcap, which is holding all of my hair nicely without falling over. :o )

I can’t wait to see what it looks like when it dries!

Now for how I made my flax seed gel. I started with the recipe found in the group pages here. I made some changes and ended up with this:

1- put 1/4 cup flax seeds and 2 cups water in a cup. bring to a boil stirring often. continue on heat until it’s thick like the cheap, supermarket brand pancake syrup that isn’t as thick as Aunt Jemima’s.
2 – strain thru wire mesh strainer into glass pyrex cup. I had to press on the seeds to get the thicker gel strained out.
3 – I added: 1/4 cup aloe vera gel, about 1 tspn epsom salt, half dropper each of lavender essential oil and rosemary essential oil, 1 capful of monoi de tahiti (this is coconut oil infused with monoi flowers that i had purchased and made facial products with, smells DELICIOUSSSS), 1 capful of liquid coconut oil, about 1/4 cup glycerin.
4 – I whisked everything briskly until it was well blended. It looks JUST like the snot used on nickelodeon to slime people! :-D
5 – I poured it all into a plastic bail jar (looks similar to this but this isn’t where I got mine from).

So, who wants to experiment with me???

  • If I trusted my hair to actually curl instead of just kind of wrinkle (it’s more than wavy, but not quite to curly), I’d totally be in on it with you!

I can’t wait to hear how this works for you. I’ve always been jealous of you girls with those fabulous curls.

  • Sounds like your evening plans went according to plan

  • I am a curly girl now, so I am all about the natural recipes. Can I see what it looked like after???? Usually, I leave my hair dripping wet and apply products, then let it air dry or go under the overhead dryer for about 15 mins and let nature handle the rest.

  • Hey, I already did the flax seed gel and it worked OK for me. Most of the gels seem to flake up on me. I already do the no-poo thing. I wash my hair with suave conditioner about once a week and I use the suave clarifying shampoo about once a month. I love the clarifying shampoo because it doesn’t have any ‘cones in it and it leaves my hair squeaky clean. Then I usually use a homemade mix of shea butter, aloe vera gel and castor oil to help seal in the moisture because my hair is super dry. Well that’s my routine and I love hearing about how other people handle their curls.

i couldn’t help but add my two cents…cuz i recently bought new curly products which i love love love.
    1. Boing by Unite (works great with the diffuster)
    2. Bohemian Beach Spray by David Babaii for Wild Aid (works great without the diffuser)
    3. Fiber Molding Paste by David Babaii (used at the end to hold the curls) (works great with and without the diffuser)
